Brown Recluse Spider
A tribute to our Vice-Commodore, Jeff Watson who experienced a brown recluse spider bite while visiting Port Elgin during the summer of 2009.

In Kingston General Hospital having surgery, there was a lady in her mid 30's from 'the County' waiting for her husband in surgery. He had been bitten by a brown spider on the leg about 6 mos previously.   She drove him to Picton General and they advised her to keep driving to Kingston .  By the time she got him to Kingston , there was so much damage, they put him on chemo to try to fight the infection. It caused him to have a stroke, and organ failure. They had nicely gotten him to the stage when we saw her that they would be able to amputate his leg from the knee down, to try to stop any further damage and reduce the amount of pain he suffered.  I was shocked that this could happen from a spider bite.

Just wanted to remind all boaters of the risks, as spiders are very common in marinas and boats.

THIS GUY WAS BITTEN BY A SPIDER LIKE THIS IN ONTARIO 2 YEARS AGO AND IT LITERALLY EATS YOU AWAY, SO BE WARNED THEY ARE HERE!

If you don't look at but one picture, be sure you take a look at the last one so that you will know what the spider looks like!  Please be careful. Spider bites are dangerous and can have permanent and highly negative consequences.

It's boating time and stay aware and safe.  Be very careful where you put your hands. These spiders like the darkness and tend to live in storage sheds or other areas that might not be frequented by people or light.

 Day 3

The following illustrates the progression of a brown recluse spider bite.  The affected skin actually dies on his body!
Day 5

Some of the pictures towards the end are pretty nasty, but take a look at the last one - it is a picture of the spider itself.

 Day 6

The Brown Recluse Spider is the most dangerous spider that we have in the USA  & CANADA

Day 9

A person can die from it's bite. We all should know what this spider looks like.
